Why your filter matters
Chlorine and sanitizers kill bacteria and algae in your pool — but they don’t remove them from the water. That job belongs entirely to your filter. A filter that’s too small for your pool, clogged, or simply worn out lets debris and fine particles recirculate, no matter how well-balanced your chemistry is.
- It’s your last line of defense for clarity. Sanitizer handles what’s biologically active in the water; the filter physically removes what’s left behind — dirt, debris, and microscopic particles.
- Filter size has to match your pool. An undersized filter works overtime and wears out fast; an oversized one is money spent you didn’t need to spend. Correct sizing is something a licensed installer should calculate based on your pool’s volume and flow rate.
- Filtration type affects both water clarity and maintenance. Different filter media capture different particle sizes and require different upkeep — the right choice depends on your pool, your equipment, and how hands-on you want maintenance to be.
- A well-matched filter protects your pump too. Pumps and filters work as a system — a mismatched filter can create excess strain on your pump and shorten both their lifespans.

Types of Pool Filters
There are three main types of pool filters on the market, and each captures a different level of fine particles with a different maintenance routine:
Sand filters
Offer the finest filtration available (down to 2–3 microns) but require the most maintenance, including recharging with DE powder after cleaning.
DE (diatomaceous earth) filters

Cartridge Filters
Cartridge filters capture fine particles (typically down to around 10 microns) without backwashing — you simply remove and rinse the cartridge. This makes the cartridge our most recommended filter type for Broward County pools, especially those with salt chlorine generators, where avoiding backwashing also means avoiding the loss of salt and treated water every time you clean the filter.
We install and service all three filter types. For most residential pools we’ll recommend cartridge first, but if your pool, budget, or existing equipment calls for a sand or DE system instead, we install those too — sized and set up the same way, with the same free assessment and quote process.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my filter is too small for my pool?
Common signs include cloudy water that won’t clear up, a filter pressure gauge that climbs quickly after cleaning, or a filter that needs cleaning far more often than it should. We can confirm proper sizing during your free assessment.
How often does a cartridge filter need to be cleaned?
This depends on bather load, debris (leaves, pollen), and pool usage, but most Broward County pools need a cartridge rinse every few weeks and a deeper cleaning a couple of times a year. We’ll give you guidance specific to your pool.
Do you only install cartridge filters, or do you offer sand and DE too?
We install and service all three filter types. Cartridge tends to be our top recommendation for Broward County pools because it captures finer particles than sand without the water waste of backwashing, and it pairs especially well with salt chlorine generators. But if your pool, budget, or existing equipment is better suited to a sand or DE system, we’ll say so and install that instead.
Can a new filter fix cloudy water on its own?
Sometimes — but cloudy water can also come from a chemical imbalance, a struggling pump, or algae, not just the filter. We’ll help you identify the actual cause during your assessment rather than just selling you a new filter.
What exactly does a pool filter remove from the water?
Filters are rated by the size of particles they can capture, measured in microns — a millionth of a meter.
To put that in perspective, a human hair is about 50 microns thick, while bacteria can be as small as 2 microns.
That’s why the type of filter you have matters just as much as keeping it clean: a filter that only catches larger debris will leave the microscopic particles that cloud your water behind, no matter how often you rinse it.
Will a new filter work with my existing pump and automation?
In most cases, yes — cartridge filters from Pentair, Jandy, and Hayward are designed to integrate with standard pumps and automation systems. We’ll confirm compatibility during your free assessment.
